Government of India Approves National Quantum Mission with Budget of Rs. 6003.65 Crores ($730M USD)

The mission will last from 2023 to 2030 and will have a number of ambitious goals. First, they will establish Thematic Hubs in academia and national R&D facilities specializing in four areas: Quantum Computing, Quantum Communications, Quantum Sensing and Metrology, and Quantum Materials and Devices. The mission targets the development of a quantum computer with a capacity of between 50 and 1000 qubits using various modalities including superconducting and photonics. The mission will also develop a quantum communications network that will connect group stations 2000 km or more using a satellite network and utilizing quantum memory. The mission will also work on developing quantum sensors including magnetometers and atomic clocks for timekeeping, communications and navigation. They will also study quantum materials and fabrication methods as well as quantum component devices such as single photon sources, single photon detectors, and entangled photon sources.
