Now in its 36th year, the Logan Science Journalism Program provides journalists with immersive and hands-on research training, providing them with invaluable insight into science practice as well as some of today’s top stories. This program, which offers both a Biomedical course and an Environmental course, will take place May 30-June 9 at Woods Hole.

Learn by doing
In the program’s Biomedical Hands-On Research Course, associates learn the fundamental techniques and approaches that underpin current biomedical science. Guided by senior scientists, they carried out pioneering technologies for imaging and analysis of the human microbiome; genome editing using CRISPR/Cas9; and DNA sequencing and analysis. They will also have many opportunities to discuss concepts and innovations in the biological and biomedical sciences with program faculty.
In the Environmental Hands-on Research Course, colleagues conduct field research on barrier beaches, salt marshes, and watershed ecosystems on Cape Cod. They discovered the complex ways in which nitrogen supplementation alters coastal ecosystems, including their capacity to offset rising sea levels and their impact on marine life and coastal food webs.
All colleagues collect, analyze, and interpret research data, which they present at the mini symposium at the close of the fellowship. They also have the opportunity to explore the rich scientific resources of the Woods Hole.
The Biomedical Hands-On Research course is co-led by Joshua Rosenthal, Ph.D., senior scientist at MBL’s Bell Center, and Scott Chilimeski, Ph.D., research scientist at MBL’s Bay Paul Center. The course journalism advisor is Maryn McKenna, journalist, author, senior author at WIRED, and Senior Fellow in the Center for Human Health Studies at Emory University.
The Environmental Hands-on Research course is directed by Anne Giblin, Ph.D., senior scientist and director of the MBL Ecosystem Center, with faculty Javier Lloret, Ph.D., research scientist in the Ecosystem Center. Science journalist/producer Angela Posada-Swafford is a journalism course advisor.
Over the years, the Logan Science Journalism Program has awarded scholarships to hundreds of journalists from leading news organizations, incl The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Science, National Public RadioThe Washington Post, USA Today, CNNand Scientific America.
