The open source AI Model ChatGPT builder from OpenAI has been released: Reports

The company that makes ChatGPT seems to be feeling the pressure from other open source AI models and is preparing to enter the market with one of its own.

The company OpenAI, which created the AI chatbot ChatGPT, appears to be working on an open source artificial intelligence (AI) model for distribution to the public.

According to a May 16 article in The Information citing sources familiar with the idea, OpenAI is making changes due to increased pressure from rival open-source AI models, such as those released from Meta in February.

It was not disclosed when the model will be available.

Since the company’s value comes from being able to sell access to its more complex models, it’s been argued that OpenAI’s open source model probably won’t compete with its flagship ChatGPT product.

Open-source AI models such as Meta’s LLaMa, which used to be available only to researchers but were fully leaked by users from imageboard site 4chan in late February, have become a serious threat to OpenAI.

Additional open-source models come from Stability AI, which released its extensive language model in April, and Databricks’ Dolly 2.0 AI, which released just days before Stability AI.

With an open source model, everyone has access to the entire source code. Models can be changed for any reason or adapted to specific needs by anyone. Some businesses decide to open source their software because they think contributions from other developers can improve it.

The makers of this model also receive considerable financial support.

Together, an AI firm, said on May 15 that they had raised $20 million in seed rounds backed by top cryptocurrency leaders such as Dawn Song, Alex Atallah, and Mary-Catherine Lader, COO of Uniswap. Together’s stated goal is to develop an open source generative AI model.

A paper by Google senior software engineer Luke Sernau released earlier in May identified open-source AI models as a serious danger to the company’s own AI initiatives.

The uncomfortable fact is that neither OpenAI nor ourselves are in a position to win this arms race, said Sernau.

He said that open-source AI models are quietly improving rapidly while Google is preoccupied with its competition with OpenAI. He wrote, “They set us up.” The open-source model is faster, more adaptable, more private, and more powerful overall.

OpenAI was contacted by Cointelegraph for comment, but no response was immediately provided.
