PRESS RELEASE — BC Prime Minister David Eby and Minister for Employment, Economic Development and Innovation Brenda Bailey visit the Burnaby headquarters of D-Wave Quantum Inc. innovative technologies can be applied to today’s social and business challenges. D-Wave also announced a new quantum training program with the BC-based Institute of Quantum Algorithms (QAI) to accelerate the development of a quantum-ready workforce. QAI brings together industry, academia and government to capitalize on British Columbia’s reputation as a leader in quantum computing.

The visit followed the launch of StrongerBC: Future Ready Action Plan in the Province, which positions technology as a key growth area and seeks businesses to drive innovation and integrate technology to improve the way services are delivered. D-Wave, a leader in quantum computing systems, software, and services, and the only company in the world to build annealed and gate-based quantum computers, has advanced quantum science since its founding at UBC in 1999. The company recently accomplished a significant scientific milestone demonstrated that the use of a quantum system provides acceleration over classical for an important class of difficult problems.

We believe that D-Wave quantum technology is well-suited for solving complex optimization problems, many of which Province is currently facing. From grid reliability to transport optimization and emergency response, today’s quantum computing technologies can be used to develop new and innovative solutions to drive efficiency.

“D-Wave is a BC innovation success story, driving the global race to solve today’s and tomorrow’s complex problems through quantum computing while creating jobs and opportunities at home,” said Prime Minister David Eby. “I am impressed by these technological advancements and excited to see first-hand how applications to D-Wave technology can help with critical challenges including climate change, supply chains and energy.”

The new D-Wave and QAI joint training program will provide hands-on quantum computing training and experiential learning for BC researchers and students working on some of the most complex and challenging questions facing society. The program will provide access to D Wave’s leading quantum computing technology and help BC grow and retain top talent by building a quantum-ready workforce that can eventually become end users of the technology. The training program will be piloted over a two-year period and serve as a building block in supporting BC’s quantum innovation efforts and building a quantum-ready and knowledgeable workforce.

“British Columbia and D-Wave have long been at the forefront of global quantum innovation and developing the skilled workforce that drives it,” said Mark W. Johnson, senior vice president at D-Wave. “We are excited to host Premier Eby and Minister Bailey today to give them a behind the scenes look at our technology, discuss real-world applications of quantum, and highlight our latest training program with QAI to build a quantum-ready workforce. .”

“One aspect of our Future Ready Action plan is aimed at building a workforce for new technologies, such as quantum computing,” said Minister Bailey. “Our government is taking action to ensure emerging technology businesses like D-Wave continue to have access to a highly skilled and diverse pool of talent. We need to train the workforce to be quantum ready now to ensure we can realize the benefits of this promising technology.”

“QAI is excited to partner with D-Wave to increase the number of people working with quantum technologies and provide practical skills training and hands-on access to quantum hardware for students and researchers,” said Louise Tuner, CEO of QAI. “The partnership between QAI and D-Wave provides an opportunity to build on the goals of the Future Ready Action Plan and expand BC’s internationally recognized quantum computing workforce. QAI is working with BC companies to help them realize the benefits of this high-potential technology across a variety of industries, including the healthcare, transportation and logistics, and natural resources sectors.”
