IBM Will Give $100 Million to University of Tokyo and University of Chicago to Help IBM Develop 100,000 Qubit Quantum Processor

IBM has a goal of developing a 100,000 qubit Quantum-centric Supercomputer by 2023. While they have made great progress since the initial introduction of 5 qubit machines in 2016, they have concluded that there are four critical areas that still require significant development to achieve. this purpose. This area covers quantum communications, quantum middleware, quantum algorithms & error correction, and components with the required supply chain.

To accelerate progress in developing technologies in these four areas, IBM has enlisted the help of research teams at the University of Chicago and the University of Tokyo and will provide funding to these universities with a total of $100 million over a 10 year period. The University of Tokyo will work on the development of better algorithms and applications and supply chain issues while the University of Chicago will work on quantum communications, quantum middleware, and fault robustness issues.
