Rating of the best humanoid robots of 2023

Is Rosie Robot Helper from the Jetsons already here? Several types of humanoids are currently used commercially or in trials. We’ve grown since the 2015/2016 DARPA Robotics Challenge, where the most popular footage was a robotic blooper reel falling and failing to open a door or climb a ladder.

Avatar XPrize 2019-2022 flaunts some very advanced humanoids which certainly advance the state of the art but the holy grail of humanoid robots combines incredible sophistication into a sub-$50,000 package. Why $50,000? Aren’t some companies going to pay more? Then again, can’t we just buy a car, as well as a very high-tech device capable of partial autonomy of 5 times the size of a humanoid, for less than $50,000? Why is this a benchmark for humanoids?

$50,000 is the annual wage for a single shift of labor at slightly more than $18/hour or the minimum wage in any low-wage industry. There is a dire shortage of manpower and it is the tedious and dangerous dirty work that employers find the most difficult to fill. Companies that are able to run two or more shifts a day also have more alternatives to fill their workforce gaps. It is small and medium enterprises that are suffering the most in our current economic and demographic conditions.

We don’t need the Six Million Dollar Man.

We need a $50,000 humanoid.

The launch of new, state-of-the-art robotics and how we integrate them into society was at the heart of my early research and my current role as Managing Director of Silicon Valley Robotics (describe), VP Global Robotics for AMT (describe) and VP Industrial Activities for IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (describe).

As more and more companies announce their work towards affordable humanoid robots, I wanted to make a reference chart for myself, and realized that it might interest others as well. The ranking system is just my own opinion and it will be interesting to see who succeeds and improves over the next few years. Enjoy this overview and decide for yourself which humanoid robot is really the best.

Who doesn’t come running?

Hollywood humanoids
Hollywood Humanoids is one of the robots for entertainment purposes, such as Sophia from Hanson Robotics, Xoxe from AI Life, or Beonmi from Beyond Imagination. ….

Chinese robots
It’s too hard for me to validate that they exist, work as advertised, and what the specs are.

Research robots
Love them but they have different goals. Only robots with plans for commercial deployment, and ideally, a price tag and a date in 2023 or 2024 when they’ll be available for purchase, if not already on sale.

Not human
I also like robots that work like humanoids but don’t look like humans. We saw some examples in the DARPA Robotics Challenge, mainly RoboSimian. Once we go that route, all quadrupedal robots, and multi-armed robots or human-like robots with wheels, will be eligible. Who knew there were so many robots!

Who have I missed?

I hope to crowdsource some more awesome robots 🙂
