New insights into the bacteria that cause food poisoning

A joint research group led by Professor Shinji Yamasaki, Dr. Sharda Prasad Awasthi, Specially Appointed Lecturer, and graduate student Jayedul Hassan of the Graduate School of Veterinary Science, Osaka Metropolitan University, determined how pathogenic genes in some provision spp. like providence alcalifaciens and Providencia rustigianii transferred in the bacterial cells of the genus provision. This group also explained that the pathogenic gene from providence rustigianii also transferred to other bacterial cells belonging to Enterobacteriaceae.

Professor Yamasaki concluded, “Hopefully this achievement can provide new insights in identifying infection pathways provision spp. and establishment of prevention methods for food poisoning.”

The findings were published in Infection and Immunity.
