eleQtron and Infineon Team to Develop Three Generations of Stuck Ion Quantum Processors

electron is a quantum hardware developer formed in 2020 as a spin-off from a research group at the University of Siegen. They are developing a trapped ion-based processor using a mini high-frequency technology they call MAGIC (Magnetic Gradient Induced Coupling) to control the qubits. Their MAGIC approach differs from many other companies developing ion trap processors that use lasers to control qubits. Infineon Technology AG is Germany’s largest semiconductor manufacturer with 2021 revenue of over 11 billion Euros and over 50,000 employees. The two companies will work together to develop a three-generation series of increasingly powerful ion trap processors that will leverage eleQtron’s MAGIC technology along with investigating three-dimensional structures for qubit scaling. Their goal is to develop a quantum processor capable of running applications by mid-2027. Infineon has a wafer maker in Villach, Austria which has been the focus of their quantum research since 2016.

Infineon has been working for some time on ion trap processors independently of eleQtron. In July 2022, they also announced that they were working with Oxford Ionics which is also implementing qubit control based on microwaves rather than lasers. They have also worked in the past with the University of Innsbruck, Innsbruck Alpine Quantum Technology (AQT) and ETH Zurich startups. Infineon has also put a lot of effort into providing Post Quantum Cryptography (PQC) solutions and in February last year introduced the world’s first Trusted Platform Module (TPM) with built-in PQC features.
