EuroHPC JU Signs QC Hosting Agreements with Six Different European HPC Centers for a Total Budget of €100 Million ($109M USD)
That European High Performance Computing Joint Venture (EuroHPC JU) is a joint initiative between the EU, European countries and private partners to develop a world-class supercomputer ecosystem in Europe. They will fund the installation of six different quantum computers at six different HPC centers in Czech, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain. The total cost for this installation will be around 100 million Euros with EuroHPC JU accounting for 50% of the total. EuroHPC will be responsible for procuring the machines and have entered into hosting agreements with each site specifying the roles, rights and obligations of each party. The quantum computer will be integrated with other classical HPC systems located in this data center. Press release from EuroHPC JU announcing signing of this hosting agreement with additional details and links about each site, available on their website Here.
Below is some information about each processor that is expected to be installed in each location.
LUMI-Q
This quantum computer will be installed in 2024 at IT4Innovations National Supercomputing Center in Ostrava, Czechia by LUMI-Q, an international consortium formed by 15 partners from nine European countries. The processor will have at least 12 superconductor-based qubits arranged in a star-shaped topology to minimize SWAP operations. A press release with additional details about this installation is available Here.
EuroQCS-France
This processor will be installed in CEAVery Large Computing Center (TGCC) in Bruyères-le-Châtel, France by the French-led EuroQCS-France consortium with partners from Ireland, Romania and Germany. The project will include an analogue quantum simulator from French start-up PASQAL along with a photonic-based processor.
Euro-Q-Exa
It will be a hosted on superconductor based processor Leibniz Super Computer Center of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (LRZ) in Garching, Germany. Initial systems are expected to be available in 2024 with larger systems up to 100 qubits available at a later date. Additional information about this installation is available in two blog posts Here And Here.
Euro-QCS-Italy
This quantum computer will be a neutral atom-based processor that will be hosted on cinema data center in Bologna, Italy.
Euro-QCS-Poland
This quantum computer will be a trapped ion-based processor that will be hosted on Poznan Center for Computers and Networks in Poznan, Poland.
Euro-QCS-Spain
This machine will be an analogue quantum computer and hosted on Barcelona Super Computer Center in Barcelona, Spain.
