D-Wave, Vinci Energies and QuantumBasel Partner to Learn How to Optimize HVAC System Design

When a new building is being designed, one of the critical elements is to properly design the Heating, Ventilation and Cooling (HVAC) system to maximize user comfort, minimize environmental burden and reduce material costs under the constraints to comply with necessary safety and sustainability requirements. This type of optimization problem can be very complex and difficult to solve effectively with classical computational technologies. That D-Wave Quantum annealers are perfect for solving this type of optimization problem so companies work together Vinci Energy And QuantumBasel to learn how D-Wave technology can solve these types of problems.

Vinci Energies, a subsidiary of the French concession and construction company Vinci Group, works in industrial maintenance, infrastructure, digital services and engineering and has more than 90,000 employees and 2022 revenues of around €16.7 billion ($18.6 billion USD) . QuantumBasel is a competency center for quantum and artificial intelligence opened last year by the UptownBasel Group to provide training, workshops and access to quantum computing resources for enterprises, research institutes, startups and universities.

The six month project will develop a proof-of-concept (POC) and has been divided into two phases. The first phase, the problem formulation phase, has just been completed and two models have been created that translate the various HVAC design parameters and design constraints into two different models that can run on the D-Wave processor. The second phase is to run the model on the D-Wave engine and review the results. If this POC yields good results, this approach could be applied in the future in future HVAC design projects.

This type of problem is a good example of the many opportunities for using quantum computing optimization in energy and construction. For additional information about this project, you can view the press release posted on the D-Wave website Here.
