Two kinds of ultrafast mode locking operations of Er-doped fiber lasers based on germanene nanosheets CREDIT Baohao Xu, Zhiyuan Jin, Lie Shi, Huarian Zhang, Qi Liu, Peng Qin, Kai Jiang, Jing Wang, Wenjing Tang, Wei Xia; |
Abstract:
Saturable absorbers as passive modulators in passive mode-locked fiber lasers play an important role in the generation of ultrashort pulses. Germanene, a graphene-like two-dimensional material with a fast carrier relaxation time and a large nonlinear absorption coefficient comparable to that of graphene, is a saturable absorbent material with a very fast response.
Two types of ultra-fast mode-locking operation generation of Er-doped fiber lasers based on germanene nanosheets

The researchers led by Prof. Wei Xia at the University of Jinan (UJN), interested in modulation switches in fiber lasers, and two-dimensional material saturable absorbers have become hot research topics in recent years. Two-dimensional materials make up for the disadvantages of traditional artificial saturated absorbers such as nonlinear polarization rotation and nonlinear amplification loop mirrors with poor environmental stability and complex structure. And germanene, as an emerging two-dimensional material, has excellent nonlinear optical properties, and fully explores its performance potential making a positive contribution to the development of passive modulators. Researchers predict its potential applications. Using it as a saturable absorber, femtosecond pulses and higher energy noise like pulses can be obtained.
The work entitled “Two types of ultrafast mode-locking operation generation of Er-doped fiber lasers based on germanene nanosheets” was published in Frontiers of Optoelectronics (published on 7 June 2023).

About Higher Education Press
Founded in May 1954, Higher Education Press Limited Company (HEP), affiliated with the Ministry of Education, was one of the earliest institutions committed to educational publishing after the founding of PR China in 1949. After six decades of struggle, HEP has grown into a major comprehensive publisher, with products of many different forms and grades. For both import and export, HEP has strived to fill domestic and overseas market gaps and meet global customer demands by collaborating with more than 200 partners around the world and selling products and services in 32 languages globally. Now, HEP ranks among China’s top publishers in terms of copyright export volume and the world’s 50 largest publishing companies in terms of comprehensive strength.
The Frontier Journal Series published by HEP includes 28 English-language academic journals, covering the largest academic field in China today. Among these series, 12 have been indexed by SCI, 6 by EI, 2 by MEDLINE, 1 by A&HCI. HEP academic monographies have won around 300 types of publishing funds and awards both at home and abroad.
About the Optoelectronic Frontier
